Captain…

…Is the IF theme this week. I did a watercolour sketch of my Grandpa, because he’s the first thing that came to mind. He lived to be 94, and on his gravestone is the line “Captain of his soul”. At his funeral I crept up to his coffin, hesitant to look in and see how he might have changed, with Wagner’s violent strings echoing through the church.

He was a great artist and singer. I remember hearing his booming voice coming out from the shower, belting out now forgotten songs from the 30’s.

Using a photo from the 80’s for reference for this picture made me think how I only knew him as an old man. I wonder how he felt living through all he did since 1909 -but like many grand-kids, never asked him when I had the chance.
