Moon 2
Sunday, July 29th, 2007A portrait of Fuz. Men are traditionally linked to sun imagery, but I think Fuz is more moon than sun.
Cool and calm, the face I see at night.

IF for this week… It’s a combo of pencil and photoshop. I guess I was thinking a bit about the figure of the moon from tarot cards, although that imagery is normally darker. I was also thinking about classic Mucha ads :o)

The theme this week for IF is ‘poem’. I thought of C.P. Cavafy, one of my favourite poets. Unfortunately, not being a Greek speaker, much of the original beauty of his works are lost on me! I’ve done a fairly literal interpretation of one of his short poems “The Souls of Old Men”…
“Inside their worn, tattered bodies
dwell the souls of old men.
How unhappy the poor things are
and how bored by the pathetic life they live.
How they tremble for fear of losing that life, and how much
they love it, those befuddled and contradictory souls,
sitting—half comic and half tragic—
inside their old, threadbare skins.”
(C.P. Cavafy, Collected Poems. Translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard. Edited by George Savidis. Revised Edition. Princeton University Press, 1992)

Sketch for a new comic. Possibly. I am quite enjoying Photoshop to block in colours, although I’m not used to using the Mac!

Discovery is the theme this week. I was thinking about an episode of Black Books where Manny spots a tiny figure of a man in someone’s hair… that’s the only explanation I have for this!
A (hairy nosed) man discovers a tiny person living inside his nostril….

I’ve started learning how to use 3d Studio Max. These 2 are my first creations, very dodgy and basic but they took so long, I thought I’d put them up here.

“Geeky” is the theme this week. I’m not sure if my submission is geeky or nerdy, maybe a combination of the two. I thought I’d take the transformer design of my car (see post below) to its geeky extreme and do a little comic. Considering how dodgy it turned out, I probably sunk too much time into it, but ah, live and learn! Anyway, Pi fulfils his role as the tea and toast-maker in this 2 page spread.

The world is gripped by “Transformers” fever! Well, not really. But since I noticed one of my car’s seats was trying to transform itself (it keeps folding forward), and since my co-workers asked for it, I drew a sketch of my car (a Daihatsu Pyzar) as a Transformer. Autobot, naturally! For the nerds out there, the way he transforms is based on the old school Bumblebee toy and a combo of other early car Transformers.
His name is Pi and he is well shielded. Of course the windshield glass is bullet proof, and all the important stuff (exhaust etc.) gets folded away when he tranforms……yeah.
I was going to do a gun but gosh darnit, the Pyzar is just too nice for brute force. I imagine he would make the tea and toast or something.

Tonight I was in the right mood for character sketches, and here are the fruits. I’m hoping to put some new comics together soon so I figured it was time for a doodle or two (the girl is from the ‘twist’ picture). Anyway, I’m trying to follow the ‘post everything’ rule people keep setting me…
